ENSO and non‐ENSO induced charging and discharging of the equatorial Pacific

چکیده
TWC modes. Results indicate that the oceanic evolution for both modes is consistent with wind stress induced verticallyintegrated, meridional mass transport into and out of the equatorial Pacific—i.e. a charging and discharging of the equatorial Pacific—despite having distinctly different wind stress anomaly patterns. The process-based similarity between these two modes of tropical Pacific wind stress variability suggests that both can produce a charging/discharging of the equatorial Pacific, however one (the ENSO mode) represents part of the ENSO cycle itself and the other (the TWC mode) represents a separate forcing mechanism of that cycle.

تاثیرپذیری رخداد بیماری مالاریا در ایران از شاخص اقلیمی ENSO
Background and Objective: Malaria is a disease affecting 300–500 million people in tropical and subtropical regions and causes approximately 2.7 million deaths annually. Currently, no vaccine protects against malaria and resistance to anti-malaria drugs such as chloroquine is increasing and spreading geographically. Moreover, anti-malarial drugs are expensive and often unaffordable to low-incom...
متن کاملEnhanced biennial variability in the Pacific due to Atlantic capacitor effect
The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the variability in the Pacific subtropical highs (PSHs) have major impacts on social and ecological systems. Here we present an Atlantic capacitor effect mechanism to suggest that the Atlantic is a key pacemaker of the biennial variability in the Pacific including that in ENSO and the PSHs during recent decades. The 'charging' (that is, ENSO imprintin...
متن کاملThe Control of Meridional Differential Surface Heating Over the Level of ENSO Activity: A Heat-Pump Hypothesis
Numerical experiments with a coupled model have been carried out to test the heat-pump hypothesis for ENSO. The hypothesis states that the level of ENSO activity is controlled by the meridional differential surface heating over the Pacific: either an enhanced surface heating over the equatorial region or an enhanced cooling over the subtropical/extratropical ocean may result in a regime with st...
متن کاملEcosystem dynamics and export production in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific: A modeling study of impact of ENSO
[1] Biogeochemical responses to physical changes associated with the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon are studied for the period of 1990–2001 using a physical-biogeochemical model. During warm ENSO, the ferricline deepens in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, resulting in low biomass and low export production. Zooplankton and large phytoplankton are more depressed than sm...
متن کاملA regulatory effect of ENSO on the time-mean thermal stratification of the equatorial upper ocean
[1] To investigate the role of ENSO in regulating the timemean thermal stratification of the equatorial Pacific, perturbation experiments are conducted in pairs with a coupled model. In one experiment, ENSO is turned off while in the other experiment ENSO is kept on. Perturbations are introduced through either enhancing tropical heating or increasing subtropical cooling. In the absence of ENSO,...
